Youngsters Dying of Heart Attacks A Cause of Concern

Mumbai July 24 Nashik Graduate Constituency MLC Satyajeet Tambe has written to the Chief Minister and Education Ministers to draw attention to constant rising problem of heart attacks among youngsters in Maharashtra. Tambe has demanded that a quality control team be set up in every school and college.

"Many places in Maharashtra have seen a rise in the rate of heart attack in students. Many important cities such as Pune, Aurangabad, Kolhapur, and Mumbai also face issues of youngsters having heart attacks. Concrete steps need to be taken in order to stop the unfortunate phenomenon. As a result, a quality control team should be formulated in each school and college," Tambe said.

Tambe added, “The team can oversee the quality of food served in the canteens, ensure that sports are included in curriculum, make sure there are no smoking zones around the institution, monitor healthy food in students' tiffin boxes. Additionally, the team will conduct counselling of parents and students to explain the benefits of a healthy lifestyle."

Getting into facts and figures, a reputed hospital in Mumbai has reported an increase in heart attack cases by 15-20% since March 2023. Most of them belong to age group of 25 and below.

According to doctors, some youngsters in their 20s start developing heart blockages because of genetic or bad cholesterol. Doctors also said role of genetics, obesity, cholesterol and diabetes are the usual suspects but it sounds almost unethical that a 20 or a 30-year old could be walking one moment and lifeless the next. The Covid-19 effect could also be a deadly cocktail.

Recently, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has said that the government has commissioned research to probe the link between the recent spate of heart attacks and COVID-19.
